Racing flags have long been a staple in auto racing and similar motorsports, serving as vital tools for indicating track conditions and communicating important messages to drivers. Typically, a race's starter, or sometimes the grand marshal, waves these flags from atop a flag stand near the start/finish line. Track marshals stationed at observation posts along the race track also play a role in relaying both local and course-wide conditions to drivers. In some cases, race tracks utilize lights in addition to flags at the start/finish line.
Among the most recognizable of these flags is the chequered flag (or checkered flag), which is displayed at the start/finish line to signal the official end of the race. In certain circuits, a repeat chequered flag may be displayed at the first flag point (usually on the opposite side of the circuit). The chequered flag is closely associated with the race winner, as they are the first driver to "take" (i.e., drive past) the flag. Upon spotting the chequered flag and crossing the finish line, drivers are required to reduce their speed to a safe level and proceed to their designated areas, such as their garage, parc fermé, or paddock, in accordance with the regulations of the series.
