The infinity symbol, also known as the lemniscate, is a mathematical symbol representing the concept of infinity. Its shape, resembling a sideways figure eight, has a long history. It can be found, for example, in the cross of Saint Boniface where it wraps around the bars of a Latin cross. However, it was John Wallis who is credited with introducing the infinity symbol with its mathematical meaning in 1655, in his work "De sectionibus conicis." Wallis did not provide an explanation for his choice of this symbol, but it has been suggested that it could be a variant form of a Roman numeral for 1,000 (originally CI, also C), which was sometimes used to signify "many," or possibly derived from the Greek letter omega, the final letter in the Greek alphabet.
Leonhard Euler utilized an open variation of the symbol to denote "absolutus infinitus." Euler freely manipulated infinity in various operations, such as taking its logarithm. However, this particular symbol is no longer in use and is not encoded as a distinct character in Unicode.
